Doomed Hiker Found Dead
My foot struck the gnarled root
And sent me tumbling down
Sprawled out with my face in the earth
I could smell dirt and grass
And the past
Whatever had died here before I came
I rolled onto my back and stared up
Into the sky
The trees loomed over me
Like authority
Wooden inquisition asking me how I got
Here
I don’t know
I don’t remember
I don’t care
I had a map but I used it as toilet paper
I smashed my compass against
A fallen log
It would be no use to me here
And I crawl to the biggest tree I can find
And I wrap my arms around it
The distressed child that clings
To his mother’s leg
Begging DON’T GO DON’T GO
And I sink away
The grey skies above me fading
To black
