Thursday Inventory
So, I’m sitting here at the computer, drinking this Imperial IPA that has been a little bit disappointing I must say and listening to my iPod on Shuffle (Rush to Patton Oswalt, then probably to Pulp or Sparks or Ingrid Michaelson) and I feel like I have a lot to type in this space, but nothing is forming in my brain. Oh I was wrong: it went to George Carlin! Nice. I am convinced the world has only gotten worse since his death. We need that voice of derision, that voice of criticism, poking holes in the all the precious institutions like church and government and advertising and business. Then it goes back to Rush but only because I skipped three or four songs to get to “Time Stand Still.” This song features guest vocals by Aimee Mann, who is the wife of singer/songwriter Michael Penn, who is one of my favorites. There is a good chance one of his songs will pop next in this shuffle, maybe “Try” or “No Myth” or “I Can Tell.” Ugh, this beer was a waste. I just don’t care for it, and I love IPAs, the hoppier the better. There is the beer by Lagunitas called Hop Stoopid Ale that tastes like it was wrung out of teenage Jesus’s jockstrap. I also like Sierra Nevada’s Hoptimum. Both are very hoppy tasty beers. And then we come to “All Tomorrow’s Parties” by The Velvet Underground. Nico’s almost mechanical voice over John Cale’s monotonous piano, Lou Reed’s guitar poking in here and there, Mo Tucker’s steady quasi-drumming… Monday I am seeing my doctor to talk about my depression and my mood swings. I can’t wait any longer. I can’t wait to find a therapist to save me, like Sean Maguire did to Will Hunting. My problems go much deeper than the need to just “talk them out,” although I still intend of finding a therapist because I want that neutral third party help. Then comes the Smashing Pumpkins with “Rhinoceros.” Reminds me of being 17 again.

I’m happy to hear that you’re going to talk to your doc. (Is that weird since we don’t talk? I’m a lurker I guess.) Some of us just require medicine. Sometimes for a few months, or years, or forever. Chemistry, eh?
